News You Can Use
Less time to play may hurt child development
Researcher Peter Gray says that children with less play time are more likely to feel anxious, depressed, helpless and narcissistic. Writing in a special issue of the American Journal of Play, he also said children today have less freedom to play than they did 50 years ago, partly because of hyper-vigilant parents. Free play allows children to acquire basic competencies needed as they approach adulthood, including problem solving, decision-making and self control, Gray writes. Nutrition Nugget:
Mix it up!<http://www.mmsend84.com/link.cfm?r=645164204&sid=15751918&m=1562238&u=AAHPERD&j=7576149&s=http://www.choosemyplate.gov/preschoolers/HealthyHabits/variety.html> Offering a variety of foods helps preschoolers get the nutrients they need from every food group. As a parent or caregiver it is your responsibility to provide a variety of healthy foods for your child. They will also be more likely to try new foods and to like more foods. When preschoolers develop a taste for many types of foods, it's easier to plan family meals.
Recipe of the Month:
Nourish your young pumpkin carvers with this fun and nutritious snack. Pumpkin Roll-Ups<http://www.mmsend84.com/link.cfm?r=645164204&sid=15751919&m=1562238&u=AAHPERD&j=7576149&s=http://familyfun.go.com/halloween/halloween-recipes/halloween-dinners/pumpkin-roll-ups-684822/> are both decorative and tasty!
Take it Outside!
October is one of the most beautiful months of the year and is the perfect backdrop for outdoor play.
This month, why not:
* Go on a nature hike, looking for signs of the changing season (acorns, leaves changing colors, etc.). Add some additional fun - have the children move like different animals on the hike!
* Add some hay bales to your play space. Not only do these look great for fall, but the children can work together to move them around the play space. They will love having something new to climb over, sit on, jump off and more.
* Take a trip to a U Pick apple or pumpkin farm. Need help finding one? Check out Local Harvest<http://www.mmsend84.com/link.cfm?r=645164204&sid=15751920&m=1562238&u=AAHPERD&j=7576149&s=http://www.localharvest.org/>.
