[Tccc-providers] child safety and door locks

I gained some insight from a conversation with a licensor from the Syracuse Regional office today that I wanted to share with you in regards to locked/unlocked child care sites. There is no regulation prohibiting locking the door to your family child care site but since child safety comes first, each provider must use common sense. There are so many things that come into play when the licensor looks at this issue. If you have an outside door (Like porch door) locked then do you have a door bell so you know someone is out there (it might be a parent wanting to pick up early, etc) Some other questions to ask yourself: If there was an emergency and the adult was somehow incapable of escorting children out of the building, is the lock easily turned so the children could exit to safety? Things to consider: the safety of the neighborhood....it may be in the best interest of child safety to lock your door (although again must take into consideration the simple lock not multiple or chain locks) So, as you can see the answer to the question is not black or white but requires thought and common sense. The bottom line is that we all want what is best to keep children safe.
If you found this helpful let me know lmk23 at cornell.edu<mailto:lmk23 at cornell.edu> or if you have further or any other questions you would like me to request clarification about, let me know that too.
Have a great day!
Lorraine
