As you know we are working in concert with Mohawk Valley Community College
to offer credit bearing classes at our site so that returning adults will
have access to a degree without the intimidation of going on campus. Those
in the child care field are already comfortable coming here for workshops,
classes and teleconferences so this is a pilot program that we hope will
take off. The first MVCC Intro to Human Services class was held here in
Oriskany last night (scheduled to run every Monday night Jan-May 6-8:45 PM).
The instructor asked me to let folks know that he will take new registrants
up to Feb 7 but not beyond that. The class is $360. (not sure of the cost of
books)
I also wanted to make sure that everyone knew that Workforce Investment
Board (WIB) has funding available to contribute to the expense of the course
for child care workers in Oneida Herkimer or Madison Counties. (The
eligibility guideline for this special funding source is up to 500% of
poverty...pretty good odds that all people in child care are under that)
MVCC has agreed to wait for payment from EIP or WIB so there is no out of
pocket expense to registrants. Everyone must apply for EIP first. For those
who are eligible for 100% payment by EIP, WIB will pay for the books. For
those eligible for 75% EIP, WIB will pay remaining 25% and books and for
those ineligible for EIP, they will pay for entire course and books. This is
an offer that doesn't come along often so I wanted to make sure that you
were aware so that you can pass along the information to those without a
degree, because this is a very good start!
