The Afterschool Alliance and MetLife Foundation are pleased to announce the 2013 MetLife Foundation Afterschool Innovator Awards call for nominations. We are looking for exemplary, lesser-known afterschool programs serving middle school youth that showcase the innovation that takes place during the out-of-school time.

Five afterschool programs will be selected to receive the MetLife Foundation Afterschool Innovator Award—each receiving $10,000, featured in our 2013-2014 series of issue briefs<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?AfterschoolAlliance/2f8361403e/15f04ede81/792e7a7b7f> and our Afterschool in Action Compendium<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?AfterschoolAlliance/2f8361403e/15f04ede81/e9b92e1fa8>, as well as offered the opportunity to present at national conferences.

Nominations<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?AfterschoolAlliance/2f8361403e/15f04ede81/e75a6af029> in the following four categories must be received by Oct. 14, 2013 to be eligible for consideration:

  1. Keeping Kids Safe and Supported in the Hours After School - Programs that have demonstrated success providing a positive, encouraging and socio-emotionally supportive environment that helps students feel safe, reduces problem behavior, and keeps kids engaged and excited about learning.

  1. The Role of Afterschool and the Common Core State Standards - Programs that are intentionally and successfully offering programming that supports student learning toward the Common Core standards and promotes the habits of mind (knowledge, skills and dispositions) that are reflected in the Common Core in order to help students become college and career ready.

  1. Students with Disabilities and Other Special Needs and Afterschool - Programs that have demonstrated success providing an environment that strengthens the self-confidence, perseverance and emotional wellbeing of children with disabilities and other special needs, giving them the tools to learn, play and succeed side-by-side with children of all abilities.

  1. Why Data Matters: How Afterschool Programs Use Data to Improve Programming - Programs that are successfully improving their programming and ability to serve children in their community based on data collected by the program, data gathered from partners (e.g., schools, other afterschool programs, community-based organizations), and/or program evaluation data prepared by outside entities.

Programs that are selected as winners will be notified this winter, and are expected to keep their selection confidential until awards are officially presented in the spring of 2014, in conjunction with our Afterschool for All Challenge<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?AfterschoolAlliance/2f8361403e/15f04ede81/785c96c5ff>. Winners will receive additional support to travel to Washington D.C. and attend the Afterschool for All Challenge, and will be expected to provide information and quotes for award materials and news releases.

More detailed instructions on the nomination process are available on the online nomination form<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?AfterschoolAlliance/2f8361403e/15f04ede81/8910ffaa7e>.
