We hope the New Year is treating you well. The Thea Bowman House has been very busy
so far this year. We held our first fundraiser of the year- Italian Night Pasta 
Dinner. It was an amazing success and thank you to everyone who supported us! The
next week, we began working on our St. Patrick's Day Parade Party Fundraiser, coming
up on March 9th! We also were featured in a Community Foundation article and we 
received over 5,000 books from a Barnes & Noble Book Drive!

St. Patrick's Day Parade Party!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Next weekend, March 9th, is our annual St. Patrick's Day Parade Party! It is from
8:30am to 1pm at the DeSales Center, 309 Genesee St. Join us for food and fun all
morning and afternoon! There will be Irish items for sale, face & nail painting,
 raffles, and shamrock shakes! As well as baked goods, pizza, hot dogs, & chili!
 Also, our special guests: Cynthia O'Hara, Author of "The Harried Housewife's Cookbook"
signing her books (which will be for sale at our event) from 12-1pm, AND Butler-Sheehan
Academy and Johnston School of Irish Dance! Lastly, Utica College Pioneer Radio 
90.7 will be providing tunes and entertainment, broadcasting live from our event!
All proceeds will go towards a scholarship fund for children of low-income families
so that they may attend our programs. If you are unable to attend, please consider
making a donation.

Five year olds from low-income communities are exposed to only 3,000 words by the
time they reach kindergarten, versus their more fortunate peers who enter school

To emphasize the importance of literacy and reading, the Thea Bowman House is launching
a "Read to Succeed" series, where members of our community come to read to our Pre-K
classes. Lead by example, show kids that reading is fun and help them develop skills
that will help them succeed. Our goal is to make reading and learning exciting while
making new friends! Our new friend, Sean "SDot" Morelle, from 97.9 Kiss FM, will

According to the Leadership Alliance for a Vital Community (hocindicators.org [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001QWa--pYtDJQjeBmuKJMOpyP3Ya9PvHWMn30YRLqmbxdM8yXXPdmrPVPOu8Zys99NgXLEttxwbR87ODhllVTltp6xHPTaF6qtEZ5uAjkfwsw=]),
47% of children in Utica are living in poverty. This is in comparison to 14% for
 New York State (excluding NYC) and 19% for the entire nation. These numbers are
 shocking and have serious consequences for our children and our community.
By providing childcare at little to no cost, the Thea Bowman House allows parents,
many of whom are single parents, to obtain stable employment to help them best provide
for their families. Furthermore we give children a safe, nurturing, educational 
environment in which they can grow and learn. We help to offset these statistics.
Donating to the Thea Bowman House is one of the most direct ways to help at-risk
 youth in our community, consider making a contribution to help us fight child poverty
and help young members of our community achieve their full potential.
