The John Winters Family Fund Creates Unforgettable Memories
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The legacy of John R. Winter, Jr., comes from his understanding that all young people
have vast potential but many youths need opportunities to encourage and foster the
development of their God-given talents. From his own experiences, he also appreciated
the value of being introduced to music and the other arts and going to camp as a
child. He recognized that many children might not be given the chance to have such
experiences. Through his generosity in creating the John Winter Family Fund, he
established a source that can be used to allow more participation in these great
activities that all children should be able to enjoy. John's daughter, Katherine
S. (Kathy) Winter, Co-Trustee of the John Winter Family Fund, also values the great
experiences she had as a "camper" and enthusiastically joins Richard G. Parker,
the other Co-Trustee of the Fund, in making funding available for these purposes.
For the past 10+ years, these co-trustees Katharine Winter and Richard G. Parker
Esq. have insured that John Winter's legacy lives on in the lives of the children
of Thea Bowman House. Thea's children, as young as 18 months and as old as 18 years,
have had positive experiences that have created life-long memories. These include
trips to the Enchanted Forest Water Safari, pontoon boat trips in Old Forge, and
camping at Camp Kingsley. Children have also enjoyed the Boonville Fair and Verona
Beach. Some of our older youth have gone to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
Lion King Play on Broadway, and the Statue of Liberty in NYC. They have experienced
the best of Boston as they walked the Freedom Trail and felt history coming alive.
And if that were not enough, this wonderful foundation has the sponsored the visits
of area jazz musician, Monk Rowe and his ensemble. Monk teaches children to write
their own lyrics and then watch them turn into a song that is played by the jazz
ensemble. Thank you, Katherine and Dick for making these things possible.
Miss Laurie's School of Dance at Thea Bowman House- Dance Recital 2013
In May, we called upon you to help us raise funds to purchase tap shoes for the
children of Miss Laurie's Dance Program. Thanks to all of you, we were able to
achieve our fundraising goal and purchase tap shoes for nearly 90 children. On
Tuesday, June 25th, the DeSales Center was packed with friends and family to share
in the incredible achievements of the students. Not only have they learned new
dance steps, but they have gained self-confidence, a new way to express themselves,
and the overwhelming support of their community. The Dance Program and the donation
of tap shoes has truly made each child feel like a star.
Pre-K Graduation Ceremony:
150 Pre-K student will be Moving Up to Kindergarten in the fall. Our graduation
ceremony, on June 18th & 19th, celebrated the wonderful students and the great
year of learning we have had together. The children sang songs & received their
certificates, along with a resounding applause from friends, families, and teachers
in the audience. After the ceremony, everyone celebrated the happy occasion with
a feast of hot dogs, salads, homemade Burmese & Thai food, and cake. There was
plenty of laughter, happiness, and warmth present.
Good News Foundation Brings Brightness of Peace to Thea Bowman House- Handmade Case
for Sculpture
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 2007, the Thea Bowman House decided to form a committee dedicated to promoting
and keeping peace in our community after 4 of our students under the age of five
were killed in acts of violence. The committee came across the bright, beautiful
work of local renowned artist Peter Michel and decided that collaboration with Peter
would provide the missing piece to our space. After two years of designing and fundraising,
the Thea Bowman House's Peace Garden was complete with flowers and a breathtaking
sculpture truly representative of peace. The result is a unique design that represents
peace amongst all people in our community. We were fortunate enough to receive a
smaller replica of the sculpture from Peter, but it required a custom case for
it to be properly displayed. After years of being hidden, we were able to have a
case made for the smaller version thanks to Paul Haley of the Good News Foundation.
Haley designed and built a beautiful wooden and glass case that is now displayed
in the entrance of our DeSales Center site. Thanks to the generosity of Mike Buckley,
Executive Director of the Good News Foundation, and the people and organizations
of our community, the Thea Bowman House is one of the few places in Utica, NY that
have public art with a purpose on display.

Boys Outing Club
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Despite a wide
difference in our
backgrounds &
current stations in
life, we are all
humans. We can
stand back and
remain uninvolved
observers, or we
can choose to
become involved &
try to do something
positive."
-Bob Lacell
About two years ago Bob Lacell, from the New Hartford
Presbyterian Church, initiated what the boys fondly refer to as
"Bob's Club." Bob was concerned about young men in the inner
city becoming involved in crimes, especially violent crimes. In
2004, Lacell's grandson was killed in an act of violence at the age of two. Since
his grandson's tragic death, Lacell has partnered
with the Thea Bowman House to create "Bob's Club" for young
men, between the ages 10-14, in the after school program. He and other volunteers
from the New Hartford Presbyterian Church take
the young men on outings to businesses & organizations nearby
to expose them to new ideas or possible careers. The program
has taken these young men trout fishing, to a car "cruise-in," to
the Utica Fire Department Central Fire Station, to WKTV (in the
studio during the 5 pm news), & a couple of visits to local
industries such as Special Metals & most recently to Fiber
Instrument Sales.They have also visited the aviation maintenance education program
run by MVCC at Griffiss Park & a nearby
commercial maintenance facility where they wen tinside of a
Boeing 747 undergoing a complete refurbishing. The club has
provided new experiences, nurtured positive behaviors, &
established unbreakable bonds for many of the young men in our after school program.
Plans are currently under way to visit a
Dairy Farm this July!

A Fond Farewell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sister Bernadette Kapfer has gifted the Thea Bowman House with her incredible spirit
of joy and enthusiasm for the past 7 years. She will be leaving on July 31, 2013
to pursue a Master's degree in Theology. While most of you know her as our volunteer
coordinator, she has worn many "hats" in the course of her work here. Sister was
the driving force for the Peace Garden that graces our Lafayette Street site. She
worked closely with Bob and Martha Lacell and artist Peter Michel to recruit gardeners
who continue to maintain this special space dedicated to peace in our homes, our
communities and our world. Sister Bernadette also did a splendid job of coordinating
our holiday assistance program. Local churches, civic groups, and individuals donate
presents, turkey's, and more at Thanksgiving and Christmas which Sister Bernadette
then organizes. It is no small task to organize efforts that serve over 80 families
& our children at Thea Bowman House. Thanks to Sister Bernadette, the donations
are delivered to the families and children in time to make their holidays brighter.
And then there is the daunting challenge of fundraising. Sister Bernadette is a
veteran of many pasta dinners, summer picnics, and St. Patrick's Day events. She
convened a committee called the "Fun Raisers" that make it all happen. Sister reported
faithfully each Tuesday to work with the after school youth as a tutor and was willing
to do any job that needed doing. Sister Bernadette brought a spirit of contagious
optimism and faith to out entire Thea Bowman House Community and she will never
be far away from our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.
